Despite globalization, technology, and transportation advancements, there are still some locations on the planet that you simply cannot visit. While some of us are fixated on space exploration and colonizing Mars, the truth is that some parts of our planet remain largely unexplored or forgotten. Other regions are home to military outposts, espionage secrets, or have even been declared “legally haunted” and hence off-limits to the public. “Room 39 is one of the most secret groups in perhaps the world’s most secretive state,” writes writer Kelly Olsen. Room 39 is supposed to be located inside the Workers’ Party building in Pyongyang, and took its name from the office it occupied at the party headquarters in its early days, according to some accounts.
Although there isn’t much official information on the chamber because to the secrecy surrounding its operations, it’s thought that it obtains revenue through both legitimate and illicit business endeavors, including counterfeiting and the selling of gold, narcotics, and weapons. This global network of enterprises is thought to have been able to provide up to $2 billion per year to North Korea.
