Regardless of whether or not the body has been embalmed, local law mandates that it be buried within 24 hours of death. In practice, local authorities frequently allow embalmed bodies to be kept in cold storage for two to three days, especially if the surviving family intends to claim ownership of the body. Embalming services have also been unavailable at times during the 24-hour period. In the past, remains maintained in cold storage while waiting for services were shipped off without issue after a few days.
