On April 18, 1973, Haile Gebrselassie was born in Ethiopia. Olympic gold medals and four World Championship crowns in 10,000 meters are among his many accolades. For the past four years, he’s won the Berlin Marathon and the Dubai Marathon. Additional accolades include the 2001 World Half Marathon Champion and four Indoor World Championships. After retiring from cross country and indoor running, Haile began competing in road races, earning prestigious medals in distances from 1500 meters to the marathon. More than 60 national record-holders in Ethiopia and 27 world record-holders are among his accomplishments. He won the Berlin Marathon in a world record time of 2:03:59 in September 2008, beating his own world record by 27 seconds at the age of 35. In February 2022, Ethiopia’s inflation rate peaked at 33.6 percent. On a yearly basis, the headline inflation rate is lower in February 2022 than it was in January 2022 (34.5 percent). In February, food inflation rose to 41.9 percent, up from 39.9 percent in January. Non-food inflation fell to 22.9 percent in January 2022, down from 27.3 percent in January of the previous year. Cooking oils and fats, non-alcoholic beverages, bread and cereals, fish and sea food, dairy, and animal products are the main sources of food inflation. The country’s astronomically high inflation rates are largely caused by supply constraints on the domestic market caused by agricultural production constraints and a persistent depreciation of the local currency.
