Christina and her mother lived with her maternal grandmother, who routinely filled in as an intermediary parent. James experienced adolescence in a two-parent family until age seven when his people isolated. He lived with his mother for two or three years, and subsequently with his mother and her playmate until he left for school. James remained nearby with his father who remarried and had a kid with his new companion.

Christina likes the chance of her adolescents encountering adolescence in a standard family, while James is stressed over possible intimate issues not far-removed and negative consequences for the children should that occur.
