The strength of your legs allows you to walk, run, and jump. However, they, like any other part of your body, can be injured or worn out. Find more about some of the most common leg injuries and how to treat them. Our legs are made up of a complicated network of bones, muscles, and connective tissues that extend from the pelvis, also known as the hipbones, to the ankle and foot. Ligaments are the connective tissues that hold the bones together. Tendons are similar to tendons in that they connect the muscles that move your leg to the bones. Fractures of the bones or soft-tissue injuries, such as sprains and strains of the tendons and ligaments, are the most common leg injuries.
The term “fracture” refers to a break in a bone. You’re more likely to have a concussion if you fall or are hit hard. Various conditions, such as sickness and repetitive action, can cause bones to become brittle and more prone to shattering. The presence of broken bones does not imply that the skin is not intact.
Compound fractures are the most common type of fracture. When a fractured bone pierces the skin, this form of fracture is known as an open fracture. Bones can be seen poking through the skin on occasion. Infections of the skin and bones are particularly dangerous.
Fractures can range from a simple split in the bone to a complete break of the bone.
