In rare cases, the hormones that allow the body to grow are disturbed, resulting in dwarfism. Malnutrition or metabolic issues can also induce dwarfism. A collection of illnesses known as skeletal dysplasias is the most common cause of dwarfism.
Skeletal dysplasias result in abnormal bone development and a small stature. This abnormal development can also result in uneven growth, resulting in a body that is out of proportion. Skeletal dysplasias are frequently passed down via the generations. The majority of patients with skeletal dysplasias had parents who were of average size. The three most common skeletal dysplasias are achondroplasia, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, and diastrophic dysplasia. During childhood, much of a person’s cartilage transforms into tougher bone. In people with achondroplasia, this technique is less effective. Some people with achondroplasia suffer bone abnormalities such as scoliosis, pulmonary problems, or spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spine). People with an uncommon variety of achondroplasia inherit two copies of a faulty gene that causes achondroplasia. As a result, the bones are tiny and the rib cage is undeveloped. Most people with this condition are stillborn or die in infancy because they can’t breathe.
