According to a March Gallup survey for women.com, women in the United States are most concerned about money, their families, their health, and concerns related to time management and stress. The survey inquired, “Thinking about your own life — what is the biggest challenge you personally face in your daily life today?” The results show that women face a wide range of issues as they go about their daily lives, but that a few — particularly economic issues and family concerns — predominate. The past year has been a landmark one for women. A record number of people are running for president in 2020 and serving in Congress at the same time. There is still a long way to go for women in the United States and the rest of the world, despite the progress that has been made.
Some of our favorite women, including a number of politicians and presidential hopefuls, were asked to share their thoughts on the main challenges confronting women in the United States today. Our policy debates are rooted in the fact that women are still underrepresented in leadership roles. The absence of women in high positions continues to hinder progress on a wide range of issues, from pay equity to humanitarian relief to all types of discrimination. In order to improve society as a whole, we must recognize that the lack of women in leadership positions has a detrimental effect on both men and women.
