Model Fire and Her Mother Alem on heart to heart

To mark Heart Health Month, many people wore crimson gowns on National Wear Red Day and ate flavonol-rich chocolate on Valentine’s Day throughout February. The foundations of a heart-healthy lifestyle are well-known: eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, aim for enough dietary fiber intake, exercise regularly, quit smoking if you smoke, drink moderately, and keep a healthy body weight. However, comprehension may not always indicate action. If you know someone who needs some incentive to start living a healthy lifestyle, now is the time to sit down with them and remind them of what they need to do and why. It may be your husband who needs additional encouragement to exercise a few times each week, or the mother of one of your children’s best friends who isn’t taking care of herself and wants to set a better example for her children. To these wonderful conversation starters, I’d add that you should be prepared with actual and practical improvements your loved one may do to improve their heart health. Keep in mind that these changes will not happen overnight, and you will need to work hard to obtain them. Small changes are suggested, such as reducing portion sizes, adding an extra vegetable serving to the lunch plate, and gradually increasing fiber consumption throughout the day.
