Ethiopia is home to a wide variety of language and ethnic groups. More than 80 different ethnic groups live there, each with its own language, culture, customs, and traditions. One of the most important aspects of Ethiopian culture is literature, which is primarily comprised of adaptations of religious scriptures from ancient Greek and Hebrew into the ancient Ge’ez, contemporary Amharic, and Tigrigna languages. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church still uses Ge’ez, one of the oldest languages in existence. Judaism has had an impact on the distinctive rituals and traditions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. While the history and culture of the Amhara people are derived from the post-Aksumite imperial reign of Menelik II and Haile Selassie, the history and culture of the Tigrayans are drawn from the tradition and culture of the Aksumite Kingdom. Men and women in Ethiopia play distinct roles. Men are traditionally in charge of supporting the family and handling family matters outside the home, while women are in charge of household duties and child care.
