Ethiopia began producing crude oil from the Kalub and Hilala fields in the country’s east for the first time on Thursday.

Three oil wells spewed 150 barrels apiece at a landmark trial-production ceremony, increasing the nation’s prospects of earning desperately needed hard currency and creating jobs.

According to the Ministry of Mines, the region has 6-8 trillion cubic meters of crude oil.

Poly-GCL Petroleum Investment Limited, a Chinese corporation, is in charge of extracting both crude oil and natural gas in the Ogaden region, Somali regional state in eastern Ethiopia.
