Anyone who has watched ETV’s single channel will recognize Dereje and Habteb, the comedy pair that defined the essence of comedy in urban Ethiopia, following in the footsteps of Alebachew and Limeneh, the pioneers.
Despite his minor physical changes over the years, people still grin or sometimes laugh their hearts out when they lock eyes with Dereje. Standing alone in front of the same audience was challenging for him. For the past ten years, Dereje has maintained contact with his friend through others who have experienced the same catastrophe. Now, he appears in Gorebetamochu, a comedy series on (EBS) that has proven to be highly popular among the youth some of whom may be unaware that he is a member of the inseparable duo. We asked him how his life has evolved since he was 20 years old, and he said, “In the late 1990s, the most important thing in my life was personal growth as I strove to accomplish a breakthrough in the field of art.” My first priority today is to build my personal brand, which will serve as a springboard for restoring my market identity.
