The secret of Tana lake that puzzled scientists

More than half of the lake’s fish species are native to Lake Tana, a shallow freshwater body of water. White pelican flotillas and small pods of hippos inhabit the shallows, which in turn support a diverse array of avian species.
For those seeking solitude and serenity, old monasteries dot the islands and peninsulas surrounding Lake Tana. Many of the lake’s monasteries, such as Kibran Gebriel and Daga Istafanos, store tremendous riches, including the mummified bones of five former Ethiopian rulers, including the founder of Gondar, Fasilidas. Legend has it that a majority of the lake monasteries date back to the beginning of the 14th century; however, at least two of them date back to the Gondarine period, and many others may date back far further in time. There is a belief that the Ark of the Covenant was once stored in Tana Chirkos monastery, which is located next to three ancient Jewish sacrifice pillars. Many of the monasteries were unknown to the outside world until the 1930s, when Major Robert Cheesman led a pioneering expedition to explore every island in the lake. ‘ The Royal Geographical Society’s patron’s gold medal for a mapping trip.
