The USD 4 billion dams were first reported to the world back in 2011. Be that as it may, the arrangement to construct the dam was started in 2006, under the stewardship of the then Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi. In 2009 and 2010, a site overview was led and its plan was submitted to the public authority around the same time.
Otherwise called Project X and later renamed the Millennium Dam until it was given its present name, the GERD, was kept in outrageous mystery up to its declaration in 2011. In March 2011, the late Meles focused on that Ethiopia needs no outside monetary help to construct a dam on the Nile. From that point forward, billions were assembled from the general population through various components.
The GERD is situated in the Benshiangul Gumuz Regional State, a spot called Guba, 40 Kilometers east of the line with Sudan and 500 Kilometer northwest of the capital, Addis Ababa. The dam, which is as yet under development, has stretched around 65% finishing. Upon the initiation of the venture which was contracted to Salini Impregilo and Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) – a state-possessed military-drove modern combination – the Dam’s development was required to be finished within five years. The public authority has now overhauled the timetable with the dam currently expected to be finished in 2022.
