Many names have become associated with each other over time to the point where it is rare to hear one without the other. For example, Lewis and Clark, although they are forever associated as a single unit, had quite different lives after the Voyage of Discovery that bears their names. Celebrities such as writers, actors, reviewers, and couples have also been associated with one another; nevertheless, their connections were perceived as rather strange at the time they were formed, or as time progressed and began to be perceived as such. Washington and Adams, the first president and vice president combo in American history, were considered a strange combination in their day; a tall, handsome, Virginia gentleman and a New England Yankee, short and pudgy, and well-versed in political debate and conflict. Even though not all of history’s strange couples had romantic relationships, their shared pasts bind them together. Naturally, some had personal ties, some had political ties, and some had professional ties; they were relatives, entertainers, innovators, or just good material for gossip columnists and editors. Some more than others, they were all formerly well-known for their encounters with one another. History reveals that their relationships were, well, different in various ways, both then and now. These are a few unusual pairs from various eras of history.
