The genie of AI has been unlocked. By 2024, artificial intelligence has impacted every aspect of our life, including politics, healthcare, and even walking our dogs (yep, you can hire a robot to do that). However, despite its widespread use, AI is still viewed with skepticism. Are we fearful or hopeful? When you consider this new age, it’s like watching a Blue Hen playoff game: You’re nervous and enthusiastic at the same time. Humans have been attempting to explain the Earth and its events for thousands of years, posing important queries about our position in the cosmos, such as: Why are we here? In the universe, are we alone? Are we going to live forever? This could be the biggest catch-22 of the twenty-first century. Since humans are naturally curious and critical thinkers, it would be almost anti-human to avoid going straight to the bottom of the AI pool. However, if AI is not properly controlled, it could undermine the very traits that make people unique. Blue Hens at UD are using AI to address everything from environmental danger to bodily suffering, while fostering an environment that welcomes both critical and evangelistic perspectives on this new subject. Higher education institutions have an obligation to consider this issue and make sure we resolve it correctly. Universities are spearheading efforts to ensure AI is human-led and helps, rather than undermines, the species.
