All of a leader’s other qualities are weakened, if not rendered invisible, when humility is lacking. It makes it easier for people to relate to and connect with you. Without humility, it’s hard to embrace the vulnerability required for leadership success in an environment of risk, uncertainty, and emotional exposure. Connecting with others is the cornerstone of leadership, and vulnerability is the foundation of connection. People may easily relate to you if you can laugh at yourself, take the chance of sharing a wacky idea, and own up to your mistakes. The capacity to restrain strength is humility. Examining oneself enables us to recognize our shortcomings. It enables us to prioritize the well-being of everyone. It keeps us from becoming conceited and stifles our conceited desires. It is particularly crucial for us leaders to develop humility so that we can hear what others have to say and use that advice to make informed decisions and steer clear of expensive blunders.
